As I said in my last msg, here is the foods we had today, I had lamb, matmat had fillet steak and my brother had duck, they all taste good. Arrr I forgot the starters, also queenies and mussels. Nice.... Esp the dessert - cream brulee.... Heheeee sooo full!

Since the weather was really bad in afternoon, we went to do some indoor activities. Bowling and pool. The attached photo is the first game ONLY. Don't let it fool u, my brother's scores are waaaaaay better than in the next two game, I didn�t capture it by my mobile but it is in my dc, waiting to upload. And after the indoor activities. We went to a french restaurant, same as yesterday, we didn�t expect it to be good, but this restaurant is even better than the pizzaria yesterday. See next post....

Today, the weather isn't as good as yesterday, so we planned to go to the south side of IoM first. To go to the south side, we have to take steam railway.. from douglas to port erin. About an hour trip. While I am writing this we are already on our way to douglas. Seem port erin is even smaller than morecambe. Port erin has a great view of sea and steep hill. But it is just too small, not worthy to stay any longer than an hour. On our way back, there are some school student occupied the whole carriage, and made the train full. So we hv to share our cab with others not nice, otherwise my brother can do the same thing on the outward trip! What is it? you can check my Flickr album, link is on the right side.

We arrive IoM at 5 past 6. A bit delayed and we can�t catch the horse tram. So we hv to walk to the hotel.. That's not too far away, esp in this nice weather. Since we arrive IoM so late, after we settled ourselves in hotel, we was hoping to find a traditional restaurant but seems our part of Douglas has not many traditional restaurant, instead we found ourselves a nice italian restaurant. Today is Tuesday and it still packed with ppl, so we dicided to give it a try. Not surprise, the restaurant is good, the food is fresh, you cab hv a look at our starter.. Really nice, esp the Manx quenie.. Yummm

Holiday!

I am going to Isle of Man today for a short break and coming back on Friday. In case you are not familiar, Isle of Man is a island in the middle of Irish Sea. They are famous for TT Racing and roads with no speedlimit. Unfortunately, I am not going to drive to Isle of Man this time, according to the ferry's website, car and passengers is costing 4 times more than foot passengers, so no car..

Hehe.. mid-week holiday is a exclusive item for student in summer. However, after living in UK for 5 years, my experience tells me all shops and attractions are closed on weekdays, it is really no point to visit any place in a UK weekends (IoM in this case).

Anyway, as usually, I will be using GPRS + Flickr to update my weblog (as a travel log), nice!

Yes, after nearly a month of coding, drawing, screaming and stabbing, my new website about Mac Dashboard Widget is here. All widgets from WithoutWidget will be free, I considered this is a give-back to Mac community especially for Hong Kong/Chinese Mac User, there are limited number of widgets that are made for them. So, rather than waiting someone to wait one, why don't let me write one?

Subversion - It saves my life..

As some of you may know I am working on 2 Mac Dashboard Widgets, seem it is kind of confusing when you have to work with 2 similar structure applications/widgets. Somehow I screwed up today by changed some code in the main HTML file and so one widget's layout is totally messed up!

That's why I spent sometimes today to setup a Source Configuration Management systems (SCM, as XCode called it), first I have to check how XCode and Mac support. Seems there are only 2 candidates, CVS and Subversion. I had a nightmare setting CVS in my server, so I better check subversion.

Unlike my CVS nightmare, Debian already got a binary version in the apt-get repository! one simple apt-get install subversion and I am ready to go! I also downloaded svnX for a GUI frontend for my Mac! After 30 mins of importing, checking out, other functions evaluation, I am in love with subversion! It could have saved my life today, but it is just too late.

Now, it is 5am UK time, I still need to figure out how can I link the widget and the subversion repository (soft-link?), so that I can effectively test the widget while I am coding. Omm.. time to sleep...

New Ferry Pier to Macau from Tuen Mun

Just read a news from Appledaily today, a private company is building a new international ferry pier in Tuen Mun. From Tuen Mun to Macau only takes 30 mins rather than 1 hr from Central or TST Ferry Pier.

This is really a good news, because, Macau airport will soon packed with budget airlines! Some budget airlines are already selling cheap ticket to Taiwan, Singapore from Macau, only a fee hundreds HKD, far cheaper than HK Airport. With the new ferry pier open, traveling to Macau may even faster than HK Airport! Wow.. really a exciting news..

I am very busy in making my 2 widgets, hopefully, they will be ready for public around the weekend. Seem once I get hold of Javascript and RegExp, making widgets became very easy. HOWEVER, I am still hopeless in making good UI, I really wish someone can do the UI and icons for me..

Hong Kong VoIP Regulation

HK's OFTA (Office of The Telecommunication Authority) begins its RFC (Request for comment) stage for governing HK's VoIP providers.

Their initiative proposal is one of the best I ever see around the World (at least Europe and US). They divide VoIP to two tiers.

Tier 1:
Bascially, it is the same as Traditional POTS provider, they have to guarantee the connectivity between user and the exchange, it is compulsory for Tier 1 (T1) provider to provide UPS (Uninterrupted Power Supply) to user in case power failure, they have to support Phone number Portability (among traditional or voip provider). IMO, OFTA give very clear guideline for T1 VoIP provider. Especially in reliability!

Tier 2:
Unlike T1 provider, T2 is mostly voluntarily based except Safety Bell (service aimed at slderly emergency service). When T2 opted in for provider user a Hong Kong based phone number (aka Dial in , 8 or 10 digits), they have to provide interconnectivity and emergency 999 services. That means HK based VoIP provider, if they only provide dial out service, they don't need to provide 999 connectivity. Sounds a bit strange for me.

In conclusion, VoIP in HK may become more popular because HK allows Nake DSL services since a few years ago. However, current HK VoIP providers seem getting a lot of bad press (hint hint: HKNT) lately, this initiative should give me a pretty clear guideline what to provide to customer.

Idea of Next Generation Forum

I have been playing Tags idea in Flickr and Technorati this few days. Similar idea is also existing in my Mac OS, aka Spotlight. In Spotlight, you can add comment to a specify file or folder, this is highly similar to tags.

So, this gave me idea to create a Tags based Forum.

For example, current forums usually divides into Topic into Categories (e.g. In MacNN, they divided into Hardware, Software and other minor group). What happens if I wanted to read a forum for all related topic about Apple's pro product like PowerMac and Powerbook? I need to read both areas. But if the forum is implemented by Tags, I can create a Smart group which includes tags "PowerMac" and "PowerBook", so a area called ProProduct can shows both topics for this 2 products.

On the other hands, another Forum like HKRDB, if I there are a few tags like Europe, Japan, Rolling Stock, Hong Kong, Ads, Game or History. So, if someone created a post with Tags Europe and Game, then if I want to read the topic in both Europe and Games, the same post will also appear in both areas. Furthermore, I may also exclude any post with Ads tags or History tags.

This idea may change the way we used to read Forums, in Tags based Forum, we can create smart Category with tags and we can read whatever we like in the area with high flexibility. A Forum administrator no longer need to divide their forum into category, just implement Tags that specify to their forum. In some case, some special even like Apple's WWDC, admin can create a special tag for WWDC like WWDC2005, if someone don't want to read anything about WWDC2005, they can exclude the post without scarfing any juicy rumours.

Just hope I have time to implement this idea....

Today, while I am trying to reload the Widget after I found some problems, as usual, I tried to enter, Lancaster. Unlike yesterday, it only gave me Lancaster in US states, but this time the widget shows, Lancaster, United Kingdom! Yeah! After some further testing, the widget now even support some small regions in HK, e.g. Tuen Mun, Sha Tin, Yuen Long. Wonderful!

Yes, BBC is right, this summer is very hot again! Tonight, no wind, high humidity, very very sticky.. God, I need to get a Fan tomorrow just in case. It is way too hot at home, you have no mood to do anything even lying down! Honestly, I don't mind it is hot but please, just give us some wind!

Train is coming back to Lancaster on weekend.

After 4 (or even 6?) months of railway track engineering work at Lancaster, finally, it is finished! And the trains are running today (Sat), so, it'll be easier for Lancaster people to travel somewhere like Manchester on weekend! Great!

Goodbye, Bo...

One of my dogs, Bo, has passed away in Hong Kong earlier this day because of a backbone injury. My parents in Hong Kong has done everything they could to help Bo. But this is the only thing we can do and it is best for him, let him go peacefully without suffering from the pain anymore. Bo has lived with us for nearly 3 years, I didn't spend too much time with him but I do miss him from time to time, although I am here in England. We will remember him and the joy and happy he gave us.

Rest In Peace, and God will take care Bo in heaven.
